00:57
First of all, sorry about missing yesterday. Here’s an important tip when you’re recording a podcast, don’t wait to the evening to record. I had no Mojo looking out the window into the darkness. Just couldn’t do it. So I will be recording these in the morning, or early afternoon from now on.
01:19 Our BIG switch from Game to Dream
All right, so that’s good. So we’re talking today about champion of dreams. It’s the eponymous episode of this podcast. So why dreams, say and not be the champion of objectives or the champion of goals podcast? Well, it’s a bit of a story. But 12 years ago, we made a big switch here at CoachVille to focus our attention on play on what I feel is the true purpose of coaching, which is to guide people in pursuit of playing better coaching is about playing better. So but what are we playing? What are we playing for, and we used to talk about, you know, the big game, the bigger game, and I liked it, but it didn’t resonate with a fair number of people. And I can understand why. Game has sort of a context of frivolousness. It doesn’t have to be frivolous, but it’s sort of perceived that way and people didn’t resonate with game.
02:23
And I don’t know why it took me so long. But it did. It took me many years to just hone in on the obvious path, which is you play for a dream. You play for a dream. Dream is perfect. A perfect word. A dream is playful. Dream sparks your imagination. A dream calls you to adventure. And the best thing about a dream is that when you have a dream, it includes a vision of becoming, you see yourself into the future, becoming the new version of you. And a game doesn’t doesn’t communicate that. So the dream is perfect for what we are talking about being the champion of dreams as coaches, this is what we’re all about. And I have to give a shout out here to one of my former coaches Coach Lance Secretan. The amazing leadership coach, he planted this seed in me many years ago, because he was talking about dream all the time. It just took me a while to get that seed into a plant. So thank you, Lance.
03:32 Every Human Being has a Dream… but many were squashed
Now, I believe that everyone, every human being has a dream or maybe many dreams in their heart. I truly believe this. However, many, many dreams have been squashed in the Industrial Age in particular, it was a brutal age for dreamers. It really, really was. And so this is why we must come together as life coaches to awaken the human family to their dreams. This is so important.
04:11 A dream doesn’t have to be BIG
And when it comes to big dreams, it doesn’t have to be big, okay. You could just have a small dream, you could have a stepping stone dream that leads to something else. It doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be a dream. We’ll talk about what that means in this in this episode. But I have a couple little stories for you.
04:33 My Soccer Dream
One is one of my big dreams, which started when I was 12 years old. I was riding around the neighborhood on my bicycle and I heard all these people screaming over it in the direction of the school yard. I wonder what on earth is going on over there. So I am being very curious. I rode my bike really fast over to the school to see what was going on. And they had set up some goal posts. And they were playing this game I had never seen before it was it was soccer. And I had played so many sports, baseball, football, basketball, hockey, I loved all kinds of sports. But for some reason, when I saw soccer being played, I just had this deep inner knowing that I wanted to play that game I wanted to play, I wanted to be out there.
04:57
And that was a start for me of a big adventure. I’m about to turn 59 tomorrow. I’ve been playing ever since soccer has taken me on amazing adventures all over the world. I played, I played in college, I coached a great college soccer team for 14 years that led me part of my path of becoming a coach as being an athletic coach. And that took me on many adventures, I met so many amazing people. And that’s the idea of a dream. A dream takes you on adventures. Now it doesn’t have to take you all around the world. You can go on an amazing adventure in your hometown, I just happened to go to Bolivia and Mexico and England and all over the place with my soccer dream.
06:15 The spark of my Life Coaching Dream
Another example I have this one is you maybe can relate to a little closer is really profound. It was it was a January; it was really cold it was in I was in Philadelphia, and I was in a big conference room, no seminar room. And I was sitting in the Landmark Forum. This was many years ago. And I was sitting there I had no idea what I had gotten myself into. And I was watching the forum leader interacting with the participants. And I was noticing my own thoughts were shifting, and I was starting to really have an awakening to some new possibilities for how I could see life and see the world. And I was watching the forum leader interact with people and just seeing people awaken and enliven in these interactions.
07:09
And I really, like I said, didn’t know what I got myself into. But as I was sitting there, I just had this knowing: I want to do what that guy’s doing. I want to do that. That’s what I’m here for. And it was really profound. And that led me on a wild long adventure that’s still going on, to become a coach to become a person who leads transformational events and, and wakes people up to new possibilities for life, becoming a member of the transformational leadership council and literally traveling all around the world with that group.
07:49
So again, that’s just another example of a dream, it’s in your heart, you don’t know what is going to be the event that awakens it, but somehow your dream has to come awake, so that then you can pursue it.
08:04 A dreamer needs a Champion
Now the thing about dreams is that when you have a dream, it’s really helpful to have a champion. This is the idea of champion of dreams. So let’s just talk about that for a brief moment. How do you champion a dream? How do you champion someone’s dream? Well, I will refer now to something I call the three B’s. We’ll talk about this a lot more in other episodes: belong, believe become. The three B’s of human transformation belong believe become.
08:38 Belong – Believe – Become
So how do you champion someone’s dream? The first thing is you create profound belonging, you create a feeling a sense between you and this other person that you belong to each other, you’re connected you, you see them, you care for them. That leads us to believe you believe in them. You believe in their dream you believe in who they can become you believe in their possibilities. And when someone believes in you, then you have a much easier way of stepping into becoming and becoming the new version of you the version of you that’s needed to live that dream and to go on that adventure. And that’s really what championing a dream is all about. And as life coaches This is what we do belong, believe become. This is what we do we create human transformation using these three powerful forces.
09:41 The Exercise – talk to people about their dreams!
Okay, so what’s a little exercise? It’s actually not a little exercise. This is actually a huge exercise… but the exercise is talk to people about their dreams. Big Dreams, Little Dream, stepping stone dreams. If they can’t connect a dream because their dream has been totally squashed- Which happens to a lot of people- like I said, it’s what’s something that they’re thinking of; something they would love to do; something that they have been thinking about or aspiring to. There’s something in there that can create a spark that can somehow then connect to their dream, but it’s going to only happen through conversations and explorations.
10:22
So talk to people about their dreams. Make a list. Make a list of 30 to 50 people, this is what I’m doing.;potential players, friends, colleagues, family, whoever it is. But as a coach, you need to become really adept at talking to people about their dreams, about their dreams, and who they want to become and what visions do they have for themselves for their life, if they allow themselves to see a bigger vision. And these folks, they may one day hire you as a coach, they may not. But either way, you will become really good at talking to people about dreams, and, and having people see you as the champion of their dreams.
11:12 See your self as BIG… Get on the phone
And this is the last part you really have to see yourself as a big player in the world, to see yourself as the one who can champion the dreams of other people. You have to envision yourself and hold yourself to a bigger picture to be that someone. And that’s what I’m encouraging you to do see yourself that way. And then get on the phone, get on the phone. We need to be reaching out to people talking to people and waking them up to the possibilities of their dreams that are inside of them maybe alive, maybe asleep, but they’re in there.

Hi Dave, Enjoying your posts!
I just finished listening to all 11 episodes and I feel so energized!!
So many great (at least I like to think so) ideas arose just simply by listening to each episode one after the other …
I feel closer to my dream, more focused and excited about all the opportunities I have imagined for myself while listening!
I will now listen to each episode again and take the time to actually do the exercises (I couldn’t stop listening and went from episode 1 until episode 11 without interruption ha!)
Huge thank you to Coach Dave for that and congrats on creating this amazing podcast!!
